In Machakos, Kenya, youth unemployment reaches 60%, leaving even high school graduates unable to find work due to the “no experience, no job” cycle. Joyce Graff is sponsoring a Rotary Global Grant application to provide 50 graduates with mentorship placements in careers of their choice. The project, developed in collaboration with Dr. Shulamit Kahn of Boston University, aims to equip young people to become self-sustaining, support their families, and expand economic opportunity in the wider community. Global Grants are funded through contributions to The Rotary Foundation.

We will be using felt blanket making materials donated by Joyce Graff to make blankets that we will donate to Project Linus. Project Linus is run by volunteers in locally run chapters that distribute blankets to hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, organizations or individually to any child that may be in need of the comfort a blankie can bring. We support all kids from premature infant to older teens. Today there are hundreds of Project Linus chapters across all 50 Unites States, providing a creative community service outlet to thousands of volunteers, and providing comfort to thousands of children. The Greater Boston Project Linus consists of several volunteers that give their time and energy to support children in the Greater Boston area. We also get involved in supplying blankets to other locations when disaster strikes. This includes sending blankets to families that have experienced floods and fires and no longer have a safe place to live. Details, location and Zoom link will be sent to Members and those on our mailing list. If you would like to attend and are not on our mailing list, please email brooklinerotary@gmail.com or contact Candace Cramer by clicking on her name at the left.

The speaker, Sophie Hintzen, will present on how bioethics shapes the way we approach innovation, responsibility, and humanity’s future. Bioethics is the study of ethical issues emerging from advances in biology, medicine, and technology. As science progresses faster than ever, bioethics helps us to ensure that human dignity, rights, and justice remain at the center of decision-making. It’s not just a concern for doctors and scientists—it affects patients, families, policymakers, and communities. Details and Zoom link will be sent to Members and those on our mailing list. The Brookline Robotics Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to expanding STEM education through robotics across Brookline and the Greater Boston Area. Our mission focuses on three core objectives: supporting four high school FTC teams, promoting robotics as a gateway to STEM for students of all backgrounds, and providing career-building opportunities from high school through students' first jobs. Since our founding, we've grown from 1 FTC team and 1 FLL team serving 30 students to 4 FTC teams and 30+ FLL teams reaching over 2,700 students. We host large-scale community events including FTC Qualifiers (1,000+ participants), FLL Scrimmages (15+ teams), and an annual FLL Explore Festival (30+ teams). Our summer camp partnerships with Penguin Coding School and RoboHub have engaged 250+ students. Details, location and Zoom link will be sent to Members and those on our mailing list. Brookline Rotary has a tradition of celebrating the New Year and seasonal joy late in January so that we do not conflict with other family/friend events. This year's festivities will be on January 22, 2026 at 6:00 PM. This is another opportunity for us to laugh and share in each other's company. For newer members, partners and children/grandchildren are encouraged as we eat and exchange gifts.
